RadarCube NET Windows Forms for MS AS: overview

The RadarCube OLAP Library is designed for NET developers who create Business Intelligence applications operating with MS Analysis 2000 or 2005. It can be used with Visual Studio 2005, 2008 and with free Express-versions of these products. The Library is entirely written in C# 2.0 and provides a user with a vast choice of functions that notably excels that of the PivotTable and PivotChart ActiveX from the Office Web Components set.

Key Features: Cube Definition
  • Support of the Microsoft Analysis Server 2000 or 2005 (2005 recommended) with ADOMD.NET 9.0.
  • Support of connections to Cube files saved locally.
  • Supports KPI and Actions.
  • Two working modes: cube browsing and displaying the results of any MDX-queries.
  • Three types of hierarchies:
    • Attribute hierarchies;
    • Parent-child hierarchies;
    • Multilevel hierarchies;
  • Additional calculated measures on the client or server side, using both the information from the fact table and values of the aggregated cube cells.
  • Additional calculated members of hierarchies on the client or server side.

Key Features: Data Visualization
  • Unicode support
  • Simultaneous display of several measures in the Grid.
  • Simultaneous drilling down based on different parameters: up to the nearest child, up to the next level, up to the next hierarchy.
  • Saving and restoring the current OLAP slice.
  • Hierarchy members grouping (including multilevel and parent-child hierarchies) on any hierarchy level without changing the hierarchy levels structure.
  • Separate sorting on any hierarchy level or dimension. A possibility to override any sorting method.
  • Ascending or descending sorting based on any column value in the OLAP Grid.
  • Filtering any set of hierarchy members with or without applying these filters in the OLAP calculations.
  • Auto filtering of the hierarchy members depending on their values in the Grid. Major/minor members selection, either based on their rank or on the Pareto principle.
  • Display in the Grid not only the values of the measures but a percent value regarding totals, subtotals, or grand totals. A possibility to create your own context-sensitive rules on measure display.
  • Placing images into any Grid cell, the automatic positioning of a picture in a cell, depending on the parameters defined by a programmer.
  • The full control over any Grid cells content, custom drawing in the Grid cells.
  • Adjustable custom popup menus in the Grid.
  • Drag-n-drop of measures or hierarchy members within the grid.
  • Auto sizing of cells depending on their contents.
  • Editing OLAP data directly in the Grid ("writeback" support).
  • Handy integration with charting and other third-party components.
  • Flexible export to MS Excel, HTML, GIF, JPG, PNG, BMP, CSV, TXT, PDF formats.
  • Easy localization, even of the evaluation version.

The OLAP Data Display Features

Even a brief overview of RadarCube features will be incomplete without mentioning the abilities of the Grid used to display OLAP-slices. This allows a user to replace the content of any Grid cell, to place a picture of any size into any Grid cell, to automatically position pictures and text within a cell, to adjust a cell's size to its content, to change order of the members by simply drag-n-droping them, context dependent filters, members grouping, any kind of sorting including alphabetical, value dependent, or custom sorting.

The unique features of the Grid settings include approximately 50 diverse parameters of cell's appearance: background color, fonts, gradient, cell borders, rounded corners, pictures according to the cell type, the standard skins, and much more. In short, you'll be able to alter all the standard drawing methods. You'll get to customize cell context menus and use the built-in data editing.

Conditional Formatting

Like its predecessor, HierCube, RadarCube supports formatting of the cell content in accordance with its values. Context formatting can be applied to a selected area or to a whole.There are different variants of formatting: you can change the background color, draw bar charts within cells, or make other amends.

RadarCube Usability

In RadarCube, not only the Grid has flexible settings but there also are different popup menus that give easy access to the RadarCube numerous functions like filtering, grouping and sorting. Popup menus are truly context and have special options for each of the Grid cells, depending both on the cell type and properties of the Cellset they belong to. Moreover you can easily customize any popup menu by using an appropriate event.

Time intelligence

One of the most important features available in popup menu is Time Intelligence. If the current Cellset has one or several time dimensions, then additional option will be available in the popup menus of the data cells to allow you to compare measure values for different time periods or to display cumulative sum since the given date. Also you can define additional Time Intelligence types.

RadarCube and MDX queries

Not only can RadarCube be used as a tool for browsing a multidimensional cube, but it can also display the results of any MDX-queries. In that case, the Grid doesn't support such operations as drilling, pivoting, sorting, grouping, and filtering, but as always you can change a cell's contents and its look and feel, as well as fix the row/column headers.

RadarCube API

The RadarCube core has a detailed and well documented API which allows you to perform any OLAP-slice modifications from within your application, obtain information about any Cube or Grid cell no matter if it is actually displayed in the current Grid report. You can create your own aggregation functions with event handlers; define your own conditions for calculating dimension members, define your own sorting and context filtering methods. We can surely describe RadarCube as a perfect tool you can use to create OLAP-reports of any complexity.

OLAP Grid editor of the RadarCube control

The OLAP Grid visual properties editor: approximately 10 nested skins, as well as more than 50 tuning parameters of the Grid cells interface are able to give to a component any "look and feel"

Pictires within OLAP Grid cells

OLAP Grid allows displaying in cells whatever you need. At that, the Grid cells sizes are automatically slaved to the contents size

Complex OLAP report

Unique features of RadarCube allow building the OLAP-reports of the exceptional level of complexity. On a given picture, in the row area, hierarchies of two types are placed: Parent-Child and multilevel. The Parent-child hierarchy is opened in a tree-like mode

Old style of pivot panels

OLAP Grid supports two ways of pivot-panels placing: standard (as shown on a given picture) and economical (see previous picture)

RadarCube context menus

The RadarCube context menus system: convenient key to its features. Context menu appears on any RadarCube cell displaying only those items which may be useful in this case. There is a feature of programming editing of the context menu contents
